Live Yoghurt and hens. What do you do?
« on: September 21, 2010, 22:06 »
I know my hens like yoghurt but it's only a little scrape from the bottom of a pot so hardly counts.
I make my own live yoghurt every few days and would be interested in what other people do. How often, o how much and why?

If you would like to know how to make easy, lovely creamy yoghurt I've posted a recipe in the recipe section.

chickens don't cope too well with lactose so only give yoghurt in small doses or give them a pro biotic such as Avipro plus which is for birds  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

As I said the yoghurt I make is definatly for me. It's just I've become aware that some poultry keepers give their hens yoghurt and I was wondering if my girls might benifit form the occasional portion. When I say they get an occasional scrape that is between 40 hens

I only recommend yogurt as an emergency calcium source.

It has the right proportions of calcium and phosphorus and with a drop or two of cod liver oil it gets calcium into the birds quickly.

Thank you. I think I'll not bother as they are fairly healthy and get plenty of greens from scraps and grass.

mine love it as an occasional treat. I usually give them a couple of pots if I notice a particularly runny poo or dirty bottom. It seems to sort them out!

My numpty question of the week.

I was told many years ago that in humans, dairy products should not be eaten if you have diarrhoea because of a lack of Riboflavin in the bowl, if that's correct would it also apply to poultry?

no idea about that in humans however chickens cannot tolerate much lactose at all in emergencies then a live probiotic may be given but not as a regular thing.

I give a small bowl of natural yoghurt as an occasional treat between my 4 hens.  They absolutely love it and it doesn't appear to have any bad effects, so I will keep giving it to them.
