Blueberries from Homebase?
« on: March 28, 2011, 20:52 »
I just recently bought 2 blueberry plants from Homebase. They came in those long cardboard tube things.  I can't plant them for a couple of weeks and, from what I've read, blueberries need moist soil at all times but the thing they're in is dry. My question is are they in some kind of suspended animation while in this state (for when they're in the shop etc)?  Should I just leave them the way they are until I plant them in couple of weeks (will they be ok?) or should I keep the roots etc moist while in the cardboard tubes??

Keep them moist.  The cardboard will wick moisture from the compost and dry out the roots.  The blueberries might not recover if dried out too much at this stage.

Can you put them in soil or pots temporarily?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I could do yes. Don't understand why it doesn't say on the packaging that they need to be taken out of the packaging asap.

Hope you haven't made my mistake and get 2 the same? They need to cross-pollinate with another type which meant buying another one....and as they were on offer I got 2..... and now where am I going to plant them ...??? ::)

I've just got the one and it fruits.
Must be a wild one somewhere nearby.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

The advice I've always seen is that although blueberries are self-fertile they pollinate better with a different variety (but with a similar flowering time) grown nearby.

I suppose if there are a lot of blueberries being grown in your immediate area that would take care of itself but they are still relatively uncommon..................

They definitely should not be allowed to dry out, they not only need plenty of moisture but should be budding up quite strongly at this time of year rather than "resting".
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
