Red mite the B**!!**!
« on: August 06, 2008, 11:08 »
Lost a chicken to red mite 2 weeks ago so Frontlined the rest of the chooks and put them in another shed.
Power washed there house with Jeyes, then sprayed Poultry Shield and dusted every where with Diatom. Left the house empty for 2 weeks not a sign of the blighters.

Cleaned again on Monday put fresh straw and litter in and allowed the girls back in Tuesday night. Today when de pooping and lifting up the straw in the nest boxes to my horror red mite bodies every where, dead but they had obviously been biting the chooks as the mites were all full of blood. So what do I do now, firstly do I let them back in their house knowing that they could get bitten again, is it the Diatom killing the mites or the frontline on the birds, and secondly where are the B!!**!!** coming from. What does it take to kill these damn things. God I'm itching like mad just the thought of them makes my skin crawl.

They can be brought in by wild birds I think. Could that be a source ?

Or they're hiding somewhere you can't get to. Do you have a felt roof ?

From what I've been told that's their favourite hiding place  :?

I was advised to use bitumen liberally applied all around the edge of the felt and it stops them getting under it. It's worked so far.

Might be worth havign a blowtorch to hand when you take the felt off.

Right. The felt and the roof have been removed, there was a few under there but not as many as I has anticipated (thank god). The felt has been burned and the house and the roof sprayed with poultry shield again. Will leave it another couple of days then put new felt on the roof.

I hope this gets rid of them this time as I dont know what else to do.

We got them in our layers shed last week and there are still a few in there, but they are the tiny ones who hae just emerged from their eggs.  They hide in the tiniest cracks imaginable!  It's taken a week so far, but I'm nearly there.

Brian creosoted around the outside a bit and that killed millions of them, but not supposed to mention the C word!  Just had our new delivery of Jeyes, Poultrysheild and red mite powder today, so another round tomorrow.  Maybe I'll be lucky and finish the Barstewards off!!!

I have been trying to get hold of some old fashioned creosote, tried putting a wanted on freecycle incase anyone had a bit laying at the back of their shed, but they wouldn't put my add on as its not enviromentally friendly.

Tell the poor old chickens that.

Will creosote substitute do anything to them ?

Or is it just the enviro unfriendly stuff that does it ?

Somebody on here or river cottage mentioned the new improved creosote was rubbish at getting rid of the mites.

I don't care if creosote is bad for the environment, the red mite are bad for my chooks!!!!!

We got ours from a place in spalding, nd Brian just said we want it for poultry sheds.  Righto said the man, I'll just go and get you a barrel!!!!

I would have thoguht pretty much anything spirit based would do for them. Even oil based might suffocate them.

Bit tricky to experiment I know without risking your chooks health but if all else fails, maybe paint the entire thing in danish oil or similar.
Sticky and would coat them all.
