hi all,

im thinking about making and cutting in a side mounted nest box for the hens to lay in.

the problem i have at the min is i have to unsettle the hens and go into the run to open the house door to get to the box i made for them to lay in.

has anyone got any plans that would cover this? or even know where i can buy one from ready made?

thanks

nathan

Sounds like a good idea Nathan.  I presume the nest boxes are in the all wood bit on the RHS.  Shouldn't be a difficult job needing plans.  Aunty could do it after tea (and cakes) if you like

How many hens do you have ?

They each lay only once a day so I don't expect you'll disturb them much

yeah i see your point,

ive only got the 3 so not many its just not realy ideal as it is.

what would be a ideal laying box size for a bantam?

thanks

only problem is you could go to a lot of trouble and they'll decide they would rather lay in the corner anyway!
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

I made a humdinger of an external nest box (IMHO) which I could draw up and post up if you really, really wanted me to  8)

i made a box out of sterling board, put a 2 inch lip on it and filled it with wood shavings!

i got a egg on sat (layed on the floor) and one yesterday in the box but nothing today.

Put some golf balls in the nest to show them where to put their own.

Is it dark enough where it is ?

Could you maybe put a sort of canopy over it to make it more secluded ?

Ooo. That's nasty. Don't know what to suggest for that. One for the experienced keepers.

Did you build the house yourself by the way ?
