Rust - AGAIN!!
« on: June 28, 2011, 22:37 »

Been to water and check the greenhouse and lotty tonight and found my broad beans covered in rust, or is it this 'chocolate spot'!!  :tongue2:

Some leaves have also curled on the edges too, Does this happen with it?

Just like last year, nothing one minute - covered the next. (And this year it is on my new allotment).

Is there anything I can do to stop or reverse it, or is that it - crop ruined??

The beans have pods on now but they are only finger wide. Should I let them grow on, or pull the lot??   :(
Help!

Ive got it on my garlic for the first time this year

I think the only thing that can be done is to pick off the affected leaves and burn them as it's caused by airborne spores :(

Chocolate spot is very common on broad beans, rust much less so, and they do look rather different.  I'd google the images of the 2 to compare.

The temperatures in the greenhouse recently may have something to do with curled edges.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I take it the broad beans are outside and the greenhouse was mentioned in passing?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Checked RHS site, rust or chocolate spot, looks like I've spaced them too close again  :( 'caused by low air flow and humidity etc'

My own fault I guess.

But it doesn't say if I've lost the crop though. Any ideas??

Should I bin them or let them keep going?

Rust is fungus spread by spores, so it will spread to other crops.  Strip off or dig up plants that show the symptoms.

It is caused by humid conditions, but this can be excarsperated by letting weeds take hold, or planting too close.  If the weather is hot, don't water during the day.  Evening time is best, and use cold water if available (ie not from a rainwater butt).  This allows slightly longer before the surface water to begin to evaporate and allows more time to seep into the ground.

My garlic suffers whenever we have a prolonged dry spell.  It never seems to affect the bulbs though.

I thought rust was host specific - so whilst conditions may be similar for different rusts to develop, they don't transfer from one type of plant to another.

Sorry.  I meant that it would spread to other plants.  I notice that it tends to travel down a row of the same plant.  Rust for leeks can spread to onions and interestingly can also infect groundsel.  (another reason to keep that hoe moving)
