WhenI had rust on my leeks I just cut off the outside leaves and used the rest with no ill effects.

As to what causes it, I don't really know, atmospheric conditions or a fungal infection possibly?

Rust is caused by a fungus, and the orange spots are pustules full of spores, which are spread on the wind.

I have found that foliar feeding with Sulphate of Potash seems to help leeks withstand attack  :nowink:

Don't compost plants with rust - you are just preserving the rust for another round when you use the compost.
