Title: Advice re Gingko (Maidenhair tree)
Post by: sunshineband on September 08, 2017, 18:56
I bought a 1m tall potted Ginko as a gift for someone, and need to repot it before then as it is in a tall 7ins pot. I reckon I can manage that, having looked at RHS advice etc re soil, drainage and so on,  but..

... the leaves are already bright yellow. I know they have Autumn colour but do they usually change this early, or is it a sign of something wrong? The leaves are still fleshy and pliable, not crispy at all.

I can't seem to find any info about this and hope someone can help please?

My 2 (sort of) bonsai ones are starting to flush yellow, but there is still green colour to the leaves.  They hold the yellow leaves for quite a while before they dry out and drop.

My best guess would be that it is in too small a pot and that has triggered an early response to autumn, so nothing too serious wrong  :)

Thank you. I'll repot it and give it some half strength sequestrene too. Good to know you can grow as a bonsai too

Mine are not in bonsai pots, but I keep them small.  If you want to grow like this, keep cutting the top out each year and also prune the branches back fairly hard.  Left to its own devices it is a tall skinny tree until it reaches maturity and spreads out a bit.  Cut back, it throws lots of branches, so gives you the mature tree look in mini size.

I re-pot and root prune every 3 years or so  :)

We have a Ginko biloba at the National Trust property that I work at.  It must be over 60 feet tall... so be warned

Wonderful tree  :D

Mine were grown from seed and I've had them at least 10 years.  They are still about 1m tall, but have loads of branches, so lots of those lovely leaves, fresh green turning to pure butter yellow over autumn :D

Everyone who comes into the back garden over summer coos over them.

I planted my one out last autumn, it was a bit of a bonsai in its pot for a few years, but it's looking good this year

That's great advice New Shoot, thank you. I don't think our son has enough space in his garden to plant the tree in the ground, so good to know it will be happy in a pot

The tree is about a metre tall, so cutting it back to get some branches sounds good
