Lawns (again!)
« on: April 01, 2011, 23:59 »
I've religiously scarified, weeded by hand, forked holes, brushed in sharp sand and patched with turf dug from elsewhere.
My grass is still patchy and I was wondering if fish blood and bone would be a suitable feed to sprinkle over? I ask because I've got masses of it and lawn fertiliser is quite dear......

I don't know.  In the absence of others' responses, perhaps you could go online to one of the sheds - B&Q etc and search for their lawn spring feed, and check its NPK ratio.  Then compare it to FBB and other garden fertilisers.

I have a feeling that spring lawn feed is quite high in nitrogen for leaf growth but I could be wrong.  FBB is more balanced, I believe.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks Yorkie!
Problem solved on our weekly Lidl shop. They had lawn feed cheap so I did it today. Also had ericaceous fertilizer on offer so the blueberries will have a treat!

Methinks a high nitrogen feed would be better, plus a re-seed over the patchy areas after. After scarifying and the winter season, it may just need time to get going and thicken up. The "tillers" of the grass that you get growing in autumn that help it to spread and thicken probably will need time and will benefit from a good feed. Give it time and a light, regular mowing should help.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Can't seed in the back garden Goosegirl because of my two-legged winged friends called chickens who love a bit of grass seed!
The lawn feed I got should be ok as it's specifically for lawns. I have tried using fbb with seed in the front garden and it's come up in less than a week with the warmer weather and rain.
I was worried the chooks might have a go at the lawn stuff but if they have it hasn't affected them!!

Well that was good stuff! We've had some rain (not a lot) and my grass must have been short of nitrogen because the lawn feed has made it change colour in a couple of days to a bright fresh green!
Just need it to spread over the baldy bits now....
