Considering sowing a few Kale in September
« on: September 10, 2013, 22:21 »
I am considering sowing a few Kale as my swedes were a dismal failure.

I know they will not grow large but may provide some baby leaves through winter.

I'd never had problems with pigeons eating the kale until last winter when they pecked the lot to stumps.  I could have lifted and tossed the plants into the compost bin but instead covered with fleece - as well as protecting them from the pigeons, despite a long and cold spring the kale picked up and provided lovely tender leaves.  So it might be worth fleecing them to encourage growth especially as we seem to be getting a rather early autumn chill this year.

I always do a second sowing of Tuscan black kale about now. The small plants overwinter fine and start producing in Feb when it gets a bit warmer.
This year it grew madly til Summer! Loads still in the freezer......

I sowed some Nero di Toscano last weekend in modules. Don't want an empty allotment over winter so will be trying overwintering onions, cabbage, kale and some cloched salads/lettuces that should survive well into autumn/winter and beyond.
