Last year we were slow out of the starting blocks and probably left it a bit late for some to enter, so I'm starting it in good time this year.
I'll copy/paste the rules from previous years which seem to have been OK, but with a slight amendment regarding declaring height........
The winner will be the tallest sunflower rather than the widest head.
There will also be a poll at the end for the best photo.
There prize is a note under your username to say you won and a Gardener's Handsalve made by Kettler's Cottage Crafts for each category, courtesy of Dabhand (Dawn).
The rules.....
Newbies can register but must have 50 posts before end of competition.
Names have to be registered by 30th June to count.
Please post pictures showing the measurement, with full length photo, by 31st October, when the competition will end.
New - If you have difficulty posting a photo showing both the tape measure and plant, due to the height of the sunflower and the lack of 2 pairs of arms, please post a photo of the flower alongside an object to compare the height with (this could be yourself!). The precise height must have been measured, not guessed - how you do it is up to you! Please be honest in your declaration.
Anyone who disagrees with Moderators will be disqualified.
Please post on this thread only to register or comment on your progress. Asking for advice is acceptable, but bear in mind those giving it are trying to beat you! Waffling posts will be deleted!
Right - who's first in to bat?

Tallest sunflower & best photo.
-
I must have 30 seedlings up 1 inch i think 8-10 varieties, there's gotta be a winner in there somewhere   ;)
-
I'm gonna talk nicely to my seedlings tomorrow !!!!
-
Is it too late to sow sunflowers now, for a decent height.
This year is my first on my new allotment and I meant to grow a couple for my grandson, but never got around to sowing them ... I haven't even bought the seeds yet.
-
Got 3 varieties, all about an inch or two... vanilla ice (ice baby) and red king from the lovely Higgledy Garden, and a shop bought one - giant single... 'giant' - it's in the bag! :D
-
Only three are up so far and one looks leggy can sunflowers bolt
-
:mellow:all right.....I'll come clean! All my sunflower seeds have failed :( That will teach me to be too eager. So.... Off we go again!!! :)
-
My seeds arrived this morning.... Can I play too. ;)
-
One of mine is starting to show first true leaves. :D
-
Lardy, you're in.
May you have as much success as you do with spring onions. :tongue2:

You may as well all give up. Look in wonder...
Cheers,

To be honest, Mrs B always says I'm good at the start but I lack stamina...
We shall see.
Cheers,

-
No faffing here. I am direct sowing.
-
No Solar Flash from me. Only one seed has emerged and 7 Total Eclipse, so may have to another think about this before it's too late.
-
Couple of random packs sown here in BG today. One Bulgarian, one Lithuanian, direct into the ground. All different colours, but not the standard deep yellow ones sown by the hundreds of acres here. Looking at being able to feed the birds on other than my walnuts!
-
I'd like to register please .
Hope I can make it to fifty posts :)
Will this one count ?
-
Are sunflowers related to cucumbers?? I sowed 8 and they are all at the first true leaf stage but during the daily inspection this morning on had just flopped over. :( Aw well - there are 7 left and I would sow more just to be on the safe side. :D
-

Is there a prize for the leggy-est sunflower seedling ::) I reckon I've got that one won. :nowink:
I dont think so, its all mine
-
I've only got room for 6. Haven't managed to kill them yet but I'm sure there's still time!
-
Can I join please, well they're my sons :)
-
Entered!
-
Thank you....must try not to kill the sunflowers
-
Better get some seed, I forgot about this!
Totty
-
is it to late to sow seeds? if i am to late to enter never mind flower should help bees come to plot
-
Later direct sowings will grow stronger than early sown transplants ;)
Totty
-
I've got to start again! :(
-
I've got 8 growing well and standing at just over 12 inches each. The short multi headed ones I started have all been eaten so given up with those.
-
beezer29 - I've put you on the list.
-
How is everyone getting on? I've got 5 Russian Giant survivors, 3 growing well & a couple not so good but still alive!!
-
Errrmmm one of mine looks somewhat like a squash LOL
-
Errrmmm one of mine looks somewhat like a squash LOL
That's funny! My squash turned out to be courgette. can't get to Fairyland to start more sunflowers (lost all mine) Is it getting too late do you think?
-
Add me in!
I have just planted out 5 very unhappy looking, slug nibbled plants but I'm sure one of them will survive!
-
Florences is just sat doing nothing. The great sulk is on.
-
Mine are still looking like seedlings. It seems many posts report less than ideal growth. Can we maybe blame the weather? Or something else? Anything really? Other than it being my own inability of course.
All the best,
Maarten
-
How is everyone getting on? I've got 5 Russian Giant survivors, 3 growing well & a couple not so good but still alive!!
Blimey they are twice the size of mine !
-
Two of them are now taller than me - just. They're both developing flower heads, in fact this morning one is just starting to open. Very exciting! I guess that means it won't grow that much taller though.
It's amazing how quickly they grow!
-
Well done I only planted mine last Sunday
-
We have just had a storm which came from nowhere, causing structural damage and flattening our sunflowers, some of which were 8 feet tall.
Ah well. :(
-
Mine have started to develop flower heads now so I don't expect they'll get much taller.
Think this is around 6ft :(
-
Wow they look lovely & healthy! The leaves on mine are much yellower. 4 of mine are flowering but was surprised to see that there are lots of new heads developing as well, which I wasn't expecting!
-
Today I saw one of my three was producing a flower head at around 3ft. So that one will have to go in the prettiest category.
-
I've got to 5ft and no sign of a flower head yet, had to prop two of them up with a cane, might be in with a chance yet then ::)(watch them die now that I've said that)
-
The biggest one I have is one that had self seeded from last year. I reckon it's about 7 ft, but has the flower head forming. Some that are smaller are still plodding on though.
Totty
-
5ft 4'' is the best I've managed so far - slugs took all my direct sown Russian Giant - something is now eating the leaves of the plants that have survived so I doubt I'll be getting anything for the prettiest either...
Cheers,
Balders
-
Afraid that we need to back out due to a foot-in-pot disaster...
-
Guess I will not win the tallest, and it was pretty ugly as well.
-
My tallest one has got to about 5ft6ins, it probably won't grow any more now.
But you will just have to believe me because to get all the flower into the photo, I was too far away to be able to read the measurement on the tape.
-
Mine are still going .... just about.
Those are 8ft posts , Id guess the tallest is around 7'6".
-
One of mine snapped off in the wind today  Rest are only around 5ft tall so far, heres hoping they make it through the night!
-
Mine re all around 8' tall and I have loads of them.
:D
-
My tallest one is taller than my house! LOL!! Pic taken 12 June
-
Mine got eaten by slugs

Our sunflowers have all been pants, Florence's being the tallest at a grand 6 foot. Wont grow now its got a flower head on.
-
can i play with you all please  does the smallest plant get a prize too ?
-
Sorry, the closing date was three weeks ago, but if you want to share your photos, that's fine, it's just that you won't be eligible for one of the huge prizes!
-
I lost about 4 of them to the wind. 1 plant had two shoots and produced 2 flowers at about 4ft. The biggest one we got was approx 5' 6". Its now going to seed, so I think I will just leave it now for the birds.
-

erm after seeing the competition I am pleased ... saves my blushes

I tried that a couple of years ago, then last year a huge field full....they grow huge amounts commercially here. But I did take a couple of pics for fun today in the garden as the wind has got up and they might be storm damaged. I hope the chooks will like them in winter, we seem to have rather a lot. OH is 6'2''

Florence won our family one at a piddling 6 foot, Harry came second. Mummy and daddy last mine turned out to be a squash ::)
-
Mine are only about six feet and beginning to flower so I have not hope and they definitely would not win a beauty contest.

Always next year must be one of the most common gardeners quotes. :D

we haven't done as well as last year unfortunately but we are still quite pleased ! :tongue2: :tongue2:

Gorgeous !! :D
-
This made it to 8'4" before the weight of the head started to bring it down. ::)
I have 1 still going with a slightly smaller head probably pushing 8'6" but it's missing a bit of flower.
-
Were still working out how we can measure our 'beast' it's got to be over 8 feet and has still to flower. (Plus we have to work out how to upload pictures from phones to here).
-
Tallest one so far is flowering now. Wall is 12ft. Got a couple still going with no flowers too.
Totty
-
Totty look like you will be adding biggest sunflower grower too
-
Lord a lorks Totty... :D
Cheers,
Balders
-
and there was me getting excited at one that is around nine/ten feet and not yet flowering
Nice one Totty :D
-
Mind you... anyone could grow loads of tall sunflowers if they had a nice brick wall like that to grow em against...
:tongue2:
(except me judging by my SF this year)

In true Dragon's Den style....
I'm out.
Tallest one only reached about 6 foot.

I have a question about bees and sunflowers. Normally bees flit from flower to flower but with my sunflowers it seems to be different. The bees seem to land on the sunflower and then stay there for ages - has anyone else noticed this.
-
Yes, I have. After watching the recent programmes on bee behaviour I was rather surprised, but I suppose sunflower heads are so large there are different rules for the bees. Whatever the reason, they and the birds are loving our forest of twelve foot multi headed sunflowers. I feel more honey coming on for the winter. :D
-

That's because the flower head actually consists of multiple flowers if you look closely, and each produces an insane amount of nectar as well as pollen - bee heaven 8)
-
We are in the middle of commercial sunflower country and the honey from our hive is absolutely delicious...and that is not being biased! The ones in the fields have now gone over well and truly but our multi headers are keeping them happy for now.

If anything is going to get the bees supping up, it's sunflowers, it's always been thus.
The other flowers that get them "drunk" are the big blue artichoke flowers. In fact I grow a few globe artichokes purely for that reason. It's all too much for them and they tend to doze off awhile. :D
-
Thank you BabbyAnn and Beesrus - I have just caught up with your comments as I am on holiday. Apparently all of my sunflowers but one have collapsed in the high winds at home. So not so much pollen for the bees. :(
-
Hi all,
This has turned out to be our tallest sunflower. On the photo is my daughter standing on my shoulders. I am 1.86m tall and my daughter is about 1.20m. The exact measurement of the sunflower came to 2.93 meter.
Is this sufficient proof for exact size and what is the tallest so far?
All the best,
Maarten
-
My collection - might be a bit over the top, blame the 50 p sale last year. tallest is about 8 foot

-
Maarten - yours is pretty darn fine - but I reckon totty (who has a magic 12ft wall to help!) is in the lead - at least from those that have posted on the thread so far... I'm out with a rather pathetic 5'10'
Cheers,
Balders
-
Here is my best offering. In fact it is the tallest sunflower we have had for many year so even though it will nt be the biggest by some way, I am sharing it with pride :D :D
I am 5ft 10ins and the top part of the flower measures 10ft 4ins on Mr Sunny's tape measure (some performance that was too  ) but others will top that no doubt.
Also, my prettiest one is Goldy, also attached :D :D
I hope you like them
-
Goldy is very pretty...
must take a pic of my best looking ones - though I think yours will beat 'em.
Cheers,
Balders
-
Okay here's mine then, I had 3 germinate from the odds & sods of packets left over the years. The first,no photo, flowered weeks earlier than the other 2 survivors & was multi headed & small but pretty. The other 2 had/ have enormous heads, which I will measure, so loads of seeds now produced for next year & a tree trunk of a stem.
Oops forgot to attach pictures😀
-
Those pictures don't seem to have uploaded, Snowy. I'think you'll need to try it again.
-
Looks like we're out again this year, the tallest isn't flowering yet, but it's not going to top much over 7 feet now. Caught these photos today on one of the 'dwarf' Russian giants.

When is the winner announced?
Pip pip,
Balders
The competition closes on 31st October. The voting will then be organised for the prettiest sunflower - running for a while I expect - then the results will be announced after that. the tallest one will be known once the entries have been scrutinized of course :nowink:
-
My one and only sunflower of 2014!
At around 5 ft, it's not going to win the tallest... but it sure was pretty though :D
-
Unfortunately I couldn't measure it (kept forgetting to bring along a tape measure) but this was the tallest I had growing right next to a standard blue barrel to the right. Guessing the barrel is about 3 feet tall, I'd put the height at roughly 10 feet so not a winner.

These were starting off well, then the sheer weight of the flower heads reduced the height ::)

EDIT: apparently blue barrels are 103cm tall, so it works out that the sunflower was possibly 13ft 7inch (4.10 metres) Realise it is not an official measurement but quite chuffed all the same :D
-
Give me a few days to sort this one out and prepare a poll for the prettiest. Been away for a bit and then had the house ripped apart to have a new central heating installed!
No more entries please, as MoS said, the compy ran up until the 31st October.
-
Well done everyone! My sunflowers didn't grow at all. Maybe the seed was too old or I planted them too soon. I will try again next year. :nowink:
-
Once again apologies for any delay.
I have consulted others regarding this and whilst there may be other sunflowers that are taller, there are only three entries that have abided by the rules and measured the precise height.
Of those three sunshineband is duly declared the winner. Well done to Snowdrop and Maarten as the runners up and of course well done to all for trying.

Robbed!
-
Themselves the rules :) them is. Thanks DD, had high hopes this year when mine kept growing & growing. I've saved hundreds of seeds so I'll probably get midget ones next year
-
That's the problem with assumption! Shouldn't have assumed that the comp was for tallest proven sunflower!
Great pics to all though.
-
I am pleasantly surprised as I hadn't converted my feet n' inches into metric to realise :D
Thank you DD :D :D
and I am glad I read them rules
and well done to Snowy and Maarten too :) :)
-
Well done Sunny, Snowy and Maarten. :D
-
Yes I forgot to say congratulations Sunny.
-
Well done everyone who has managed to show a sunflower of any kind. I will have to try again next year!
-
congratulations sunshineband :D and well done to Snowdrop and Maarten too
Next year, next year ..... :tongue2: (must find a tape measure!)
