Chitting sweetcorn, when to pot up?
« on: May 06, 2024, 09:54 »
I’ve had woeful germination with direct sowing so I’m trying chitting on damp kitchen roll in a Tupperware. Some have a little root sticking out, about 4mm. Im going on holiday for a week tomorrow. Can I leave them till I get back or should I plant the ones that have sprouted now?  Thank you

Can't say I have problems with sweetcorn in pots. 1 failure out of 35 I assume you haven't got the space as pot grown is very successful.

Err.... asking for a friend... but is the chitted bit of the sweetcorn that appears the root or shoot? So which way up would it go in a toilet roll tube?

The root is first to sprout followed a day or two later by the shoot. Root is pointy with hairs coming off it, shoot is blunt and smooth.
