Growing Leeks Advice Please.
« on: April 07, 2010, 16:37 »
I recently watched Johns video on growing on leeks & thought planting in a deep container first a great idea.

So i have planted in this,

Its an old waste recycling bin sitting on another one upturned to aid drainage. It measures L20in, W15in, D12in. I just filled it with 70L of multipurpose compost, scattered a packet of seeds & covered them over.
I am quite chuffed with finding a use for some of the stuff lying about in my garden.

My question for the experts is this. Will the lil leeky fellers be ok left outside or will I have to bring em indoors if it gets frosty?

 Cheers.

I generaly just stick things in the ground green side up.

very good method that iv'e used for years now.let the tops die back in autumn and store in a cool dark dry area.yas got fresh clean carrots right through till late march.
just pull them as needed.

Can I hi-jack this and ask about the carrots sorry for my ignorance do you just plant as normal and they stay in the soil as is or do you mean you store them in sand?   - think I may be making a call to the council for an extra green box tomorrow

Thanks
Missy

They can be left in the soil but a container that size can be heavy to shift indoors unless you have help. Sand is just as heavy but also does a nice job. Depends on what you have on hand.

i sow all mine in recycle boxes using70% levingtons and 30% hoticultural sand.start them off early (last week) and grow on under cover till risk of hard frost has past (late may here).
pop them outside after that and keep well watered.i then bring them back into the tunnel early autumn or as the tops turn.
check for any bugs and store in a cool dark shed for the whole winter.leave them in situ in the boxes though.
they'll go dormant and you can lift as you please.the same applies for new potatoes sown late july.
one word of caution though, only grow them in sterilized compost and sand. you dont want any garden soil or muck in there with all its baddies in tow.

Hi Missy, our boxes are no longer in use as we recently changed to wheelie bins & the council wouldnt come & get the boxes, lucky for me. So i cant just ring up for some more :(

May knock on a few neighbors doors to see if they would like me to take said boxes off thier hands.  8)

Oooh I had never heard of doing carrots this way.

We have got some spare blue boxes as we ended up having to get a blue bin for the amount of recycling we do!
I shall recycle the recycling bins...   got plenty of carrot seeds this year, more than enough for the plot.  I think in boxes they'll be easy to fleece too.

Thank you! :D
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

I wouldn't have put such depth of compost in (for Leeks), but that may just be because I'm too mean!
