Looks like its an old wives tale then. Thanks for the responses, i too would rather drink it than poor it on my Leeks!

I have my usual leeks going OK but I also have some late planted left overs that look a bit skinny but I am just leaving them to come on at own pace. If still small in spring they will go in stir fries. I agree with other comments -- fertilizer may well produce soft growth or premature seeding, and neither is good.
