Is this impacted crop?
« on: March 30, 2009, 21:18 »
Hello I am a brand new owner of three lovely pullets, they are already part of the family after only two weeks! I am a bit concerned that one of them is stretching open her beak as if 'gagging' when she first comes out of the coop. Apart from that she looks well and is eating and  laying. I thought it my be impacted crop (according to the book). Tried to give olive oil but she wouldnt open her beak! Any advice please help.

It could be gape worm as Kim suggests. But it could equally just be the hen clearing a tickly bit if food from her throat.  I have a hen who does it frequently.

Listen to her breathing if it's not at all laboured or rattly I'd no worry !

Thank you for suggestions. I dont detect any worms in poo but will give some worming medicine. She (Buttercup) is hanging back from the other two and is last to feed so I suspect bullying, but she doesnt have any obvious signs of damage.
