Chicken Limping
« on: November 03, 2011, 17:24 »
Hi everyone,

I have just been to check on the girls before bedtime, and noticed Ruby is limping.   My OH picked her up and we have looked at her foot.  The fingerlike pads underneath seem a bit swollen.  I have made an appointment with the Vet for tomorrow afternoon, but I am a bit worried about her.  :(

Should I let her stay with the other girls tomorrow morning?

Does anyone know what it might be?

Thanks KC x

Sounds like bumble foot, well spotted, let her stay with the flock, she'll be happier :)

Thanks Evie,

I have been reading the old threads about bumblefoot, and do you think that this wet weather seems to contribute to it?

The girls have an enclosed run which has a very thick layer of wood chippings but their larger free range enclosure is quite wet at the moment.  Think I may keep them in the drier run for the next couple of days as the forecast is very wet and heavy rain.

Will see what the vet has to say tomorrow.

Thanks

I'm not sure about the weather, our chicken had it in the summer when their run was on the  veg plot and I think MILs chicken had it in summer too.

Let us know how the visit to the vet goes :D

Hi everyone,

Took Ruby to the vet who was as good as gold.  Apart from: did she limp ? did she heck !
Ran around the vets like a chicken olympian :tongue2:  Brought her home and put her back with the other girls, and there she is limping......

The vet was lovely, and checked both feet.  Said she could feel no swelling and thought maybe she has sprained it somehow.  I will keep an eye out for her over the weekend, make sure she keeps eating etc.

The vets only charged me £11.86 which I was well pleased with !

End Cottage Vets @ Howden, East Yorkshire.  One of the partners keeps chickens so I think I am lucky being near them.

Thanks again, just going to lock them in now as fireworks have just started. ( a day early )

Hi everyone,

Ruby is still limping though not so pronounced.  I have picked her up yesterday and today and notice the side she is limping on, her actual leg is really warm, but the other isn't. :(

I am going to try to speak to the vets later today, but does anyone have any more ideas?

Apart from that she is eating, drinking, laying and scratting around quite happily.

Thanks
