Ladybird urgent help
« on: November 01, 2010, 20:48 »
I have a friend whos house is on the market but for the last few weeks she has noticed an awful lot of ladybirds appearing in various rooms, its got worse and worse and now its several hundred which at night all gather in the corner. Variouos types from two spots to 16 red and black, we tried scooping them up and moving to the bug house on the plot but they just keep on coming, she doesnt want to kill them but its a joke as the estate agent just looked like  ??? that

Any help would be great

They are probably getting ready to overwinter in the window frames. Dust the frames with turmeric powder, they hate the smell. When they have gone wash the inner frames with a mild disinfectant.

They are coming in to hibernate. They will have a sleep, then the heating comes on, they think its spring, wake up, but there is nothing for them to eat, then they die.
The options are:
1.stop them getting in, termuric sounds like its worth a try.
2.they get in, you manually relocate them.
3. call in a pest control person to exterminate them.

It is difficult at this time of year with them and the lacewings too. If you can save them that would be nice! but it can be a bit creepy when there are loads of them invading.

I guess these are harlequin ladybirds - they come in all kinds of patterns but are all the same species.  They are not a British natives, they are American which are a bit larger than the British ones and are now quite common.

We get them coming in to the house to hibernate at this time of year, and having discovered that they are interlopers I vacuum them up.

I was up the ladder cleaning the gutters last week and found several dozen huddled together under the edges of the roofing felt behind the guttering  :)
