I have a large Gooseberry bush in the garden which is getting attaced my ivy >:( so I'm moving it to the allotment - when would be the best time to transplant it?  Thans for all you valued comments in advance ;)

I think it should have been done whilst the plant was dormant.  You might just get away with it now if you do it pronto.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yep,I agree with Yorkie, you should get away with transplanting your Gooseberry bush if you do it now. Give it a really good watering first then uproot it and water it well again after transplant. Also, when you uproot it you may come across parts of the plant that will break away from the parent, thus getting yourself further plants!  :)
