Saving climbing french bean seed
« on: October 02, 2012, 18:50 »
Hi all. Apologies in advance if this has been covered at some point....
I really want to hoik out my climbing french beans so I can put my onions and garlic in.  I left the plants in for seed collecting and my cosse violette have some lovely big pods on but I think it might be a while yet before they dry on the plant as they are still going strong.
Would it be ok to pull them and hang them in the shed to finish drying or am I better off leaving them and plonking my onions in somewhere else?  I have read that this is possible but would rather  go on your experience.

Try to leave them as long as possible if you are wanting them for next year's seed, or they might not be fully viabel.

For drying to eat, do wait until the pods are beginnign to dry naturally and then hanging them up in the shed to dry works just fine (well it does for me  ;) )

Plenty of time for onions to go in so another week or two for the beans won't hurt

Thanks Sunshineband.  :)  I shall leave them for a bit longer and put in stuff where I can and pot the rest for next spring.
Just remembered the oca bed is in front of them (doh!) so may pop a few in when they're up, although it will be almost winter festival by then!

Oca can stay in the ground until about January, even after the foliage has died down

Somehow the tubers seem to carry on growing

Oh dear!  Guess I'll be making other plans then...
On the bright side, managed to get another few meals worth out of them today.  :tongue2:
