Gladioli
« on: September 25, 2012, 11:12 »
Hi
I seem to have gladioli scattered in various places in my plot (do they self seed?)
I would like to move some of them to a more convienient place.
Is now a good time to move them or should I wait till the spring.

Thanks
Elaine

I lift mine before the first frosts come along since they're already dying back for the season and let them dry out under the porch shelter with 2/3 of the stalk cut off so the corms can dry up properly. In my climate I replant in spring but UKrs can replant almost anytime.

Doesn't matter exactly how they're dried or when lifted, but it helps to lift them to remove the rotting old corm so it doesn't affect the new one.

I think they do self seed.

If you want to lift them i'd do it in a about a months time, remove all the old corms and store the nice plump new ones to plant in the spring. There will be lots of baby corms as well. Look after these as they reach flowering size quite quickly.

I planted a few corms in my veg garden years ago. They've never been lifted just left to freerange. ::) Now they are quite a big patch, spreading out from the originals. They flower  well and the flowers are really big. I use them as cut flowers.  :)
I put a layer of rotted muck over them when they die down and that gets them through the winter. :)

Thanks for all the good advice. I will let them die down a little then move them around, and settle them in with a good mulch for the winter.
They do make lovely cut flowers don't they  :)

I have a mssive amoutn of baby corms surrounding an original one, all poking out of the soil in a mound

Never seen these before

I am digging up the plants in a week or two.

Do I just replant these separately to bulk up next Spring? They are each about 2mm across

I think you split the little cormlets off, plant them in a gritty compost and they take a couple of years to get to flowering size.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yeah, take about 2 years to flower (but you might get a lucky one next year!).

I carefully break off the corms and choose the biggest ones to replant. I have a tray of 20 pots (3 inch pots) and fill them up with gritty compost with a little bonemeal added. By next spring they're good to be planted as normal.
