Planting ideas please !
« on: April 22, 2016, 18:08 »
I have a small flowerbed into which I would like to introduce something where I have previously always had bedding.
I am thinking along the lines of something that will not be bigger than approx 24" H x 18" , preferably evergreen
like maybe a Hebe and a something else.  The bed is in full sun all day long (provided it is sunny!), good top soil about 12/15inches deep then chalk.  It is quite windy most of the time.
Somebody suggest a Daphne, because she says they are very slow growing, but I don't know anything about what conditions etc they require.
Please tell me your thoughts along with any other ideas, thanks, Mrs Bouquet

You have well drained soil in sun, so the plants sold as alpines at the garden centre would do well.  Some get about around 12/24" tall, so are really too large for an 'alpine', but they may suit your purpose.  Phlox, dianthus and dwarf hebes all feature into the average selection.

Herbs might also be an option.  You can get more compact lavender like Hidcote.  Thyme comes in pretty leaf colours.  Marjoram comes in a golden leaf version as well  :)

Thanks for that New Shoot, I am off to the garden centre later for a mooch, and I certainly hadn't thought about the taller of the alpines, what a good idea, so I have made a list, and I'll let you know !, regards, Mrs Bouquet

Geums would do well and come in a rage of red/orange/yellow shades and would perhaps add an extra "shape" to your mounded evergreens.
