Preventing cats scratching the sofa.
« on: January 18, 2015, 10:35 »
I know they do it to clean their claws and as a scent marker, but has anyone found a good remedy to help stop them shredding my sofa?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

a little bit of double sided sticky tape (or normal tape folded back on itself so is sticky on the outside) on the spot they've taken a liking to scratching

Put a scratching board/pole by the side where the cats do it.

If it's the corner, we have placed a cat scratch post at the corner.
The sofa rests on the base of the scratcher, so it cannot move.

I don't dislike them, I'm just more of a dog person. My Aunts Cat used to sink her claws in your leg if you stopped stroking her, which kind of put me off at an early age, and my daughter is allergic

We had one of those and they used it as well as the sofa. They go outside and have places to scratch so - er?

GG there is always Aversion therapy which is a form of psychological treatment in which the cat is exposed to a stimulus while simultaneously being subjected to some form of discomfort. This conditioning is intended to cause the cat to associate the stimulus with unpleasant sensations in order to stop the specific behaviour

Another story from the same household mentioned before which could be classed as aversion therapy,

Bert to Doris " Doris the cat keeps licking the butter"
Doris to Bert   "well put it in the fridge!"

Yup! He did !
