Earwigs in the polytunnel
« on: August 18, 2009, 16:54 »
Hello, its me again  :). I wonder if anyone has any brilliant ideas about earwigs. It happens that these charming little creatures have always repulsed me since I was a kid, and I've been contending with the odd one all summer long whilst  picking (from the veg beds outside) and washing my Little Gem lettuces. We were late into the season this year getting our polytunnel constructed and into use, so for now it has ended up with lettuces too(amongst other crops) and the blighters seem to like the conditions in there even more!

Does anyone have any good ways to remove/keep them out of the polytunnel?

Stick some straw in an upturned plant pot on a cane, the earwigs will crawl into it then you can tip it out and jump on them.

I'm sure this has come up before so I also suggest trying a search of the forum.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I always search forums before I ask a question as I don't like bothering people, but I didn't find anything  particularly relevant to my problem so I asked...

Thanks for your helpful reply  :).

Any more suggestions anyone? I don't know how easily I can source straw round here (by anything less than the extremely large bale) I don't need that much as I haven't got chickens any more..

Found this on the RHS website

You can get smaller amounts of hay for guinea pigs etc in pet shops or DIY

So hay would do the trick too then? That's easy to get in pet shops as you say.

I have had the same problem, they are eating everthing. The up turned flowerpot does work. but I put some newspaper up in there instead of straw, I was surprised how many I caught.

Argyllie you can use anyhting simialr t straw including long dries grass scrunched up, which is at least free.

My daughter has an aversion to earwigs too and can't even handle the pots in case they have earwigs in them

The pot traps do work though  :D

Still got them but they're far more prevalent outside this year. :( As I have posted in one or even two other current threads recently. ;) :D
