Tomatoes
« on: March 13, 2017, 10:19 »

Well it is a rotten day down here but I am just about to go out and sow my tomato seeds for this year. I am only growing four varieties this year and cutting back a bit on number of plants.
San Marzano x 15 for passata
Cherry Roma x 5, St Pierre x 5 and Monte Carlo x 5 for salad use.
They should be just right for planting out in mid May ... if the bloomin weather will cheer up a bit

Five varieties for me.  Greenhouse Akron F1 (a red job), Golden globe (a yellow Jobby)  Both of these I've not grown before but they seem to be highly recommended for flavour and high yielding.  Super Mamande which will be in bags and outside against a south facing wall.  It'll be my earliest tomato.  Inca's (a plum bush job) for outside for lots of passata.  And finally Tumbling Tom for when I'm sitting on the patio with a glass of white wine when the sun is setting

Sowing mine at some point this week.
3 x Ailsa Craig, as a general slicing tomato,
2 x Tigarella as, the same but for a bit of a difference,
2 x Sweet Million, the kids eat these like sweets,
3 x Gardeners Delight as a salad tom,
2 x yellow variety, probably Sun Gold to add a bit of colour.
I will also grow a beef variety too but not decided what yet.

All these will be grown in my green house with soil borders.

This should give me plenty of options for salads and sandwitches.
Roll on the sunny days!

Sowed mine about an hour ago.
Zlatava, a Czech variety.
Nepal, a medium to large red.
Noir de Charbonneuse,
Black Cherry,
Sungold, grow this every year, tasty, prolific, and has a long season. Grew some plants from side shoots last year, made very good plants.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

Hi, do you recommend Yellow Peardrop? I've read it has lovely flavour and is nicely tangy?

Not sown any tomatoes yet, this year's attempts will include:

Golden Cherry
Sun Sugar
Black Opal
Suncherry Smile
Suncherry Extra Sweet
Sun Grape
Golden Sweet
Orange Santa
Golden Crown
Rosella
Green Doctors Frosted

Last year I said
Quote
Yellow Peardrops are nice toms, a bit acidic rather than being too sweet, which is perfect for me.
They grow up for a little while until the weight of foliage/fruit makes them hang over

I sowed all my toms at the weekend - we tend to go for 2 or 3 plants of lots of varieties so we can do taste tests! Mrs WhiteRabbit never used to like raw tomatoes but since growing our own, she's developed a real liking for them, so doing the little taste tests is a stupid, fun thing we do!

We're growing:

Roma
Marmande
Gardeners Delight
Sungold
Alicante
Tigerella
Black Russian
Sweet Aperitif*
Black Opal*
Alisa Craig*
Golden Crown*

Varieties marked with an asterisk are ones we've not grown before.

I'm really looking forward to some proper tasting toms...the shop bought ones are grim.

Black Russian and Ferline at the allotment
Tumbling Tom in my back yard.
But I am fast running out of Bordeaux mix and I know 100% if I don't spray they will all get it.
Someone needs to come up with proper blight protection- or maybe I should get a greenhouse?

Sowed my second batch of sungolds.
No experiments this year, unless something takes my eye in a garden centre.
Sungold
floridity
marmande
gardeners delight
all under cover.
Crimson crush as my main outdoor blight free crop. They'll be a proper big crop for sauce freezing with basil.
If I can find my old ailsa craig, I'll sow them too.

I've bored everyone with my 'sport' Crimson Crush plants that went incredibly well last year...(They were from seeds the previous year, and just two plants among the dozen or so, motored away against all odds, and looked totally different from the rest). So they're in the mix for the allotment!

Otherwise, Gardener's Delight, Shirley, Country Taste and Golden Cherry will be the babes around the house for this year!

mine are all up and standing between 1 and a half inch to 4 inches tall under T5`s in the grow tent, next to a motly collection of peppers and chillis...in no paticular order:
sungold
black krim
berkley tye dye
gold medel
brandy wine
san marzano
marmande
copia
sunrise bumblebee
micheal pollan
. . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

Black Cherry
Green Zebra
