General question about maintaining temperature
« on: February 26, 2012, 18:19 »
Hi,

Got some flowers to grow on the allotment as well as some veg, the instructions say I should maintain the temperature at 15-20 degrees C. This may be a silly question but: how?

I have a greenhouse and a zip up mini greenhouse in that. There is also a pot stove, is that used to maintain temp or just to burn wood? Despite the flue the place still gets smoky (not to look at, but to breathe)

Also, is 15-20 degrees C at night time too or just the day?  ???

And finally, it says when sowing indoors to cover the trays with glass, polythene or a propagator lid - can I just put the tray into the zip up greenhouse?

Thanks everybody :)

Sounds like you have bought summer bedding flower seeds.  You'll need a heated propagator indoors to get the seeds going.  No need to rush if you don't have the proper facilities outdoors to keep them frost free.  Maybe better to wait a little.

There's a lot of info on here if you click on the Growing Help link at the top left of the page.  Maybe have a read and see if that gets you started  :)

Most work sown in a seed tray, sealed inside a plastic bag and kept on a warm window ledge.

As soon as they germinate remove the placcy bag and leave to grow on.A piece of Kitchen foil bent up behind the seed trays works as a good light reflector to help them grow  ;)

Ask for further instructions when they have a few leaves  ;)

Hi Zesty, get yourself a heated propagator, with a thermostat control, its a bit of trial and error to start with, what with the temperature fluctuating with the ambient temperature ( air temperature)
Most seeds are going to germinate at around 15 to 20 degrees, so get a thermometer, and adjust accordingly, good luck  :)
