Salsify or scorzonera
« on: June 25, 2013, 09:42 »
Just come back from ten days in the Alpujarras in Spain.

Lots of salsify were growing locally. The last time I came across these was walking the Ridgeway in the UK.

I brought back some seeds. Anyone ever grown this? Apparently you can eat them like carrots. But the seed heads are lovely.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

salsify is a lovely veg, great flavour.

I tend to peel, roast with garlic, butter until soft inside, but it is great boiled and mashed.

I grew both two years ago. They have long ( over 2ft roots) thin, but I found hard to dig up without breaking, any root left in will grow the.    following year.
They both tasted lovely, but the digging up was a problem.
I am considering growing in drainpipes for next year

Cheers Carl

You can sow now. They can be left in the ground till needed, even next year. You have to peel them as the outer 'coat' is yuk. They were an everyday veg in Germany, but over here you pay a fortune for them, if you can find them, of course.

I remember my parents growing both when I was quite young. We're growing scorzonera this year. A rabbit got into the plot a couple of weeks ago and caused damage to the plants among others. I thought they were done for, but they rallied aand are growing well.
