I have just taken a new allotment sight unseen(covered in snow at present), it
is '5 Rods'.
Could someone tell what size is 5 rods ie area please?

One rod is a square 16 ft 6 ins each side -- if I remember what I did at school correctly. :unsure: :unsure:

A traditional full allotment is 10 poles (rod and perch are the same as pole) so you have a half allotment.
Your plot is approx 150 square yards.
Rod/pole/perch is an old measure. It makes more sense than first appears. The old way to measure up land was physically with a chain measure. The chain was divided into 100 links, a pole is 25 links. An area of 1 chain wide X 10 chains long is an acre. 10 chains make a furlong.
Our very own metric system. Only when we try to express it in yards do we get confused. Even more when we think in metres.

Find out if it has been given up recently or is it covered in grass/weeds/brambles. This will help you plan how to clear if necessary. Also try to find out if any plot has had white rot on onions.
