Title: Growing veg seeds on a windowsill.
Post by: Goosegirl on April 11, 2024, 09:02
It's the first time I've tried this and it seems to be quite a success! My first snap peas all germinated so they're now in the greenhouse, my leeks are starting to show as are two dwarf French beans. I've still got parsley and mini-pop sweetcorn to come but I'll definitely do it again.

It’s what I’ve always done, needs must, I live in a flat and don’t have a greenhouse at the lottie. It works ok. When the weather is good I put the seedlings out in the backyard for their light bath and then inside again in the evening.

Well I'm currently saving a fortune on heating because every windowsill in my flat, and my kitchen table, is overrun with trays of seedlings so I can't turn the radiators on :D. The problem is when they all tilt towards the light so you have to turn them around periodically like a tanning bed.

I know the trick with kitchen foil behind the pots so any light from the window is reflected back behind the seedlings. Fortunately I have a greenhouse so am putting them in there. Just hope we don't get a frost anytime soon!

I've planted various herbs on my window sill, they do grow, but they seem to spurt, get very long with not many leaves
I've tried holding off watering them in the hop e it will slow down the growth, its not working, just long strands with very few leaves

I have rocket and coriander on the kitchen windowsill nearly all year round. Both are my main salad ingredients.
Bit late with tomatoes and sweet peppers so stuck them on there till they got going.

I've always did this, my 8ft wide window faces almost south so its cracking for starting things, I put food bags (clear) over to help along as my location is slightly north
