Onion/Shallot dilemma
« on: June 05, 2010, 19:50 »
Good evening all, I'm new here so be gentle, xxxx

Myself and the duvet sharer planted up some shallots/onion sets and all was going well and good growth made, but we have noticed that there they are producing anywhere between 3 to 5 mini onions in a rosette effect. My question is/are 1, do we need to split them up to singles, 2, will they still be edible.
They were bought in a pre-pack form and from dutch growers that deal with retail, from our local agri store.

I'm sure there is someone here that may know and is willing to share their knowledge.

Sounds like they are shallots - they are meant to grow like that.  You don't need to do anything with them until they are ready for harvest.
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

Good evening WP and welcome to the site. If the plants are shallots then this is what you want them to do. They grow edible bulbils in clusters. If you wish, you can use the small, young growth like spring onions in salads. :D
