Coping with clubroot
« on: March 05, 2011, 20:23 »
Transplanting the seedling into a 5" pot to ensure a good rootball, is that depth or diameter? As in deep roots or large root ball   Either way, is it possible to re-pot them in larger versions of Richy's paper pots & put straight into the ground?
Thanks Mash.

5" is rather large, 3" I find adequate.

Never tried paper pots.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you decide you want to do 5" it would be better to go to 3" first, and then pot-on to 5" once the 3" pot is nicely full of roots

A step up from a 3" pot to a 5" one is also a very large step up in the amount of compost required.

Thanks D.D., I used my few 3" pots for my Andes caulis & paper pots for my calabrese, & all year round caulis. As asda's own yog pots are 2 & a half inches deep I left my brussels in those as they're looking strong & healthy. Hope that's okay as I know size is important
  :tongue2:   ;).

I've heard you say that you grow "large plants" to combat clubroot, and I had always assumed 5" pots or more - interesting that 3" is enough :)

It's worked for most brassicas for the last 8 years, but cauli's were always a bit of a flop until I came across "Clapton",

Which suggests playing music to plants does work then, I tried it once and the plants ended up in dire straits   :D :D

My brassicas have no option - the pigeons in loft on next plot like Magic Radio so the brassicas get whatever they are given.
