Brussels sprouts
« on: March 07, 2013, 12:56 »
Hello, I sowed the seeds of Brussels sprouts 3weeks ago. They were very quick to germinate (4 days). They have not done anything . They have their seed leaves but no proper leaves yet. I know that they are slow growers but they seem to have stopped growing. I sowed the seed in cell trays and they are in the cold fame. Do you think they will grow or should I sow some more?

You're plenty early for sowing brussels, they'll go in their own good time

I've got cauliflowers sown in January that are only just getting their true leaves
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The slower and stockier they grow the better in my opinion.

You wouldn't advocate a heated propagator then?

I'm going to start mine off tomorrow all things being equal.  Mine are the Roodnerf – Seven Hills variety.  They didn't do much last year so I'm going to give them another go and feed them a bit more often this year.

I find it helps to have 2 or 3 varieties of sprouts. It helps stretch out the season

A couple of varieties and two sowing dates I reckon. Am growing red Rubine and montgomerie.

No DD, the heated propagators are not for members of this family for sure.
Anyway, there's no room at the moment due to the parsnips and broad beans.  ;)

My lovelies are now in their seed tray lightly watered in some brand new compost, 4 per module in our outdoor plastic greenhouse.  Fingers crossed.
