Greenhouse Floor
« on: April 03, 2011, 00:20 »
HI There

What's the best material for the floor in my new greenhouse?

At the moment the ground is compacted soil.  The Greenhouse base is sat on a 3" x 3" timber rectangle so I have 3 inches depth before I reach the bottom of the Greenhouse base unit.

Thanks in anticipation.

No such thing as a best, as each person has their own opinion

I leave mine as earth I just dig manure or compost into it and plant tomatoes direct :)
I cover the earth in the path area with some weed cover fabric...sorted!

Hi,

I'd echo what mumofstig has said.  Everyone has their own opinion and it does depend on what you put in it, whether you like using beds or prefer grow bags or pots.

I have 3 raised beds within my greenhouse (that I replace 1/2 the soil each year with fresh compost from the heap) so I left the floor as earth but covered the none bed areas with weed proof membrane and some gravel.

Ok just to be different we have gravelled the borders and paving bricks through the middle. We intend to use growbags and pots.

Thanks for the comments.

I am pleased to hear that there is no right or wrong way.

I had 5 8ft lengths of decking from a previous project so early evening I covered the floor with week fabric and screwed some batons on the underside of the decking so I can lift it in and out when necessary.  I think I will cover the remaining u shape borders with gravel and then put some staging in along 2 of the 3 sides.

Just hope the decking doesn't get too slippy.

Thanks again.

If you have soil it means slugs can come up through it.
