Lean To Positioning direction
« on: January 21, 2011, 17:51 »
I have just bought a polycarbonate lean to 6 x 4 greenhouse which is currently being constructed. I have cleared the space in my small garden and I have 2 choices.

N/E facing from the end of the kitchen and window.

S/E facing from the high adjacent wall to the neighbours.

I really would like it at the end of the kitchen as it will look better against the house AND help keep some of the heat in when it's very cold (which is is in our kitchen). Also the tumble drier vent would keep the inside warm.

I want to start off all my early veg sowing as well as grow toms in summer. The end of the kitchen gets morning and a little afternoon sun (in summer) and the S/E facing wall gets  afternoon (around 11-1 ish)

Can I get away with N/E facing ?

I would advise the S/E position for two reasons: it will get more light, and I'd be concerned by the tumble drier venting into it - will contribute lots of moisture laden air and thus raise the likelihood of fungal diseases in the greenhouse.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

That's disappointing. What I was wanting to hear was both positions are good :-(

I would have thought that in the heat of summer too much heat can harm plants.

Well folks, I have found out to my horror (and I did measure before I bought it) that it won't fit in the ideal spot so the only choice I have is the N/E but it will stick out into the S/E area a bit. The only problem is what to do about the tumble drier. My wife suggested to open the top vent everytime she uses it.

can you find a way of extending the pipe so that she can poke it out of the g/h window, rather than have the dryer venting hot steamy air into the g/h, which is far from ideal :(

the kitchen window will be inside the greenhouse if attached. I could at a push put it against the ideal spot but it will mean removing part of a low brick wall that has a garden border behind it. If I did this it will mean a lot of extra work and not enough time to spend on my growing BUT it will be a change and definitely a challenge.

Well, it's finally up on the S/E facing wall after a lot of jiggery pokery. I had to remove a low wall that was in the way. Of course now the whole garden is a mess and I have no plan to structure it. At least the greenhouse is up and I can get things started.
