Quick Compost Bin
« on: May 15, 2012, 15:47 »
Last August I posted that I needed to make some compost bin's in a hurry,so I used builders 1 ton bags.
I'm glad to report it was a success.
The original 5 bags reduced to 3 when I turned them in January.
I am planting squash in them this year so at the weekrnd I dug over the top foot or so and the compost looked very good with a lot of worms in it.

Advantages over compost bins I've made in the past from pallets are:-
Bags are easier to get hold of and transport.
No skill required to construct.
Can be folded up and stored when not in use.

For those who did not see the original post:-
Turn a builders bag upside down, cut a flap in the bottom, (only cut 3 sides, this forms the lid).
Insert 4 cains, 1 in each corner of the bag, to keep it open while it is filled.

Great news, thanks! ::)

We have a couple of bags free and the bins are full so it'll be good to make another..  :D

I saw some seriously funky builders rubble sacks today - all garish coloured vertical stripes  :D
I am using a really huge one on my allotment to keep grass mowings in but I didn't do the lid thing or the canes

I have one at home being used as a raised veg bed and it's sporting a crop of onions at the moment.  I used to fill it with all the muck and bedding from the chicken house and run.  By the time it's full it's rotted down enough to plant in  :)

I did leafmould in a builders bag. Right way up, 4 fence posts hammered into ground and the big loops nailed to the top of each... sagged a bit but did the job...
