Deep cleaning the hen house???
« on: September 21, 2011, 13:24 »
While cleaning out the chooks house today - just a sweep out and change of bedding, I wondered how often I should do a proper deep clean with the jeyes fluid or disinfectant???

Do they free range or are they in the coop all of the time?  How many chickens to size of coop?

There are five of them in quite a big shed and they do free range a lot of the day, it is just that when I was sweeping it out today - I noticed it was starting to 'hum' slightly!!!

What is the flooring?  is it washable? We have 4 hens in a similar sounding set up and wash the floor once a week and the area under the perch every day.  It doesn't take long to do, only takes about a minute longer than simply sweeping.

I don't know if its the recommended way but works for us!!
The glass is neither half empty or half full - it is simply the incorrect size! Find a new glass!

I poo pick in the coop & around the run daily, checking in & under the bedding for any sign of red mite etc and sniff gently when I'm wedged into the coop by the access door.

If it seems a little ammoniac, I decide it could do with a proper turn out at the weekend.

I note on the pet calendar what date it was done & so I can look back rather than scheduling it for specific timings: in winter/spring when they are in for longer, the clean-outs have been more frequent - every 4-6 weeks.  In summer when, ironically, it's easier to scrub out & get stuff dry, the intervals are more like 2-3 months - but it's all based on the condition of the house.

That's great, thanks for that!!! :)

And what is best to use as a cleaner, I thought Jeyes would be most effective, but a bit concerned about the smell upsetting the chooks!!!

Stalosan F is a disinfectant that you can sprinkle around to reduce smells.

Joyful uses Hemesan which is the same as Stalosan but cheaper. There is also a product called Biodry which is said to be even better! :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

sorry joyfull uses Stalsan F as a dry powder and Vanodine V18 as a liquid. Hemexan is an alternative to Diatom but cheaper  :D.
