rose suckers
« on: May 06, 2011, 08:49 »
I've got a few climbing roses which are doing well;

Would you mind having a look at these pictures please?

Are these suckers or is just new growth? I read that suckers have 7 leaves but these have 5 and look like healthy growth to me, but have a suspcicion that they should be removed.

What is the problem with these leaves? Both climbers have it;

Thanks for any advice/help

they don't look like suckers to me, suckers are usually very thorny and have different foliage to the rest of the plant.

The spots are black spot, a fungal disease. I think you can still buy a spray for it, if it spreads badly the rose can lose all its leaves :(

I'll hop down to  the garden centre for a spray then.

I say hop, but I'll probably drive.

Thanks!

Readers will probably not want to know that Roseclear 3 was withdrawn from sale 30/5/2010 and is not legally permitted to be used after the end of this month.  :nowink:

There are alternatives though, including a new Roseclear product, although surprise surprise, it's not cheap!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Thanks people.

I just ordered some Roseclear, which I will use till the end of the month.

Just for fun, here are a couple of roses - is it very early for them?

The other climber is covered in buds - about 20 - can't wait to see them - they have a gorgeous colour and scent.

Lovely roses (mine are not quite there yet, which is hardly surprising given where I live!)

If you have ordered the new Roseclear product there is no need to use it in a hurry as it's only Roseclear 3 for which time is running out for it to be used legally.  :)

The other thing to remember about black spot is that hygiene is vital (the plant's, not necessarily yours  ;)  :lol: ).

Do not allow any fallen leaves to remain on the ground as they will help to reinfect with the fungus.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
