New Year, New Shot at Beetroot, Carrots and Dill
« on: January 25, 2009, 19:55 »
These were our three biggest failures last year, followed closely by peas. The peas will be tricky again I'm sure but since everyone else grew B, C and D without trouble, I'm assuming it was something we did wrong that led to our poor harvest.

I've decided to grow the carrots and beetroot in containers. I had all the problems one could have last year- drought, poor germination, carrot fly, mice, rabbits, bla bla. So this year it will be containers with proper compost, and fleece overtop. An isolated ward, if you will.

Dill shouldn't be tricky either but ours germinated poorly, and the poor seeds that did manage it and grew into plants were promptly eaten by something. So the dill also gets a tent of fleece.

And the plot gets a new gate. Rabbits, I'm on to you.

Does it sound like I am doing the right thing or am I just over-reacting?

Didn't do carrots or beet last year. But i did do dill. Or rather i tried to, i sowed some.............nothing happened..........i sowed some more zilch, zero. :(  Think maybe the weather didn't help.

I'm hoping for some sun to try again  8)

So good luck to all of us for a better summer than the last 2 :!:

My dill didn't work well either, I got mine free with some gardening mag not sure which one.  One stork other seeds didn't germinate.  Think I may of started them off a bit late getting them free, so will try earlier germination this year.

I grew carrots in a tub last year as they won't grow in my ground because it is too stoney. They had good foliage on them and in November I was clearing the plot, it looked as if they had all died as no foliage left but when I tipped the tub up there were lots of lovely carrots.
I have never had a problem with beetroot and I have always grown it in the ground. I thought I had read that it didn't like tubs but I am probably wrong.  :?
Good luck this year.
