Changing Food
« on: November 03, 2008, 11:15 »
I've decided to change my girls over to pellets rather than mash.  I've only a little mash left, so i am giving them half and half at the moment.  I noticed this morning that they left some of yesterdays pellets.  Do i continue to mix it for a few days, slowing increasing the pellets or should i just switch them over?

Hi V&R

The advice is usually to do it gradually over a few days. If they go on hunger strike, it won't last long. If food is there, they won't leave it for long and once they find it's good stuff, they'll not look back !

If it were me V&R and I had some mash left I would carry on mixing until I'd used it up, gradually incresing the pellets as you've said  :)

I agree totally with Rob, their stomachs will rule them in the end

Change over straight away. The mash and the pellets will contain the same ingredients. A hungry stomach will soon get them clearing their food.  "If its to be done, tis best be done quickly" or something like that. :D If you are mixing the two, they may very well pick out the mash at the expense of the pellets. Chickens are simple souls and we have just got use our brains and keep that one step ahead of them.

If you think you have problems , you should try changing your birds from wheat to barley. Mine held out for days because they presumably didn't fancy the sharp bits on the of the barley but I won in the end.
