Leaf Mould
« on: May 11, 2010, 23:06 »
I was just wondering what everyones opinions are on using Leaf Mould (well rotted) around my potatoes (earthing up)

Been told that Leaf Mould has very little nutrients in it but would be good aroudn the spuds as helps break down soil and retains some moisture?

I like leaf mould and use it for all sorts. I'd definitely use it  :)

It's valuable stuff. You must have plenty if you can use it as a mulch. Mine gets mixed in with the potting compost or round the beans.

I should think you do; Compostqueen now demoted to CompostLady-in-waiting!  :)

Leaf mould is usually made from the fallen leaves of deciduous trees; there is no fundamental difference between leaf mould and compost made from much softer, greener material but it takes a lot longer to rot down (I would say up to 2 years but others may be along who disagree or who have a cunning plan to speed that up!) Good stuff though!  :)

I've always understood that leaf-mold is vey valuable to improve the soil texture, but contains virtually zero plant food (good for seedlings).

Whereas properly made compost from green matter contains a lot: should be high in nitrogen, and actually feeds the plants.

Good info HERE on this very site!

Bit of a surprise to me because I always thought animal manures were much higher in nutrients than home-made compost but the differences aren't that huge.

Doesn't list an analysis for leaf-mould, but I would expect it to be lower than compost; both are valuable soil-improvers.
