Tomato blight advice
« on: August 02, 2009, 18:29 »
I have looked on here and around the internet and it does seem that my tomatoes are infected with blight.  This is one of the ones outside the greenhouse door so it is likely they will all get it as I often leave the door open for ventilation.

Pics below:

My question is, what do I do now?  Can I pick off the green tomatoes and use them for chutney?  Or do they all have to go in the bin?  One piece of advice on the web said to pick them and wait 5 days.  If they don't show signs of infection then they are ok to eat.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

It doesn't look like blight to me :)
I've just spent half an hour cutting off the bottom leaves from the toms in my polytunnel and they all look like that when they get old!
Are your dodgy leaves mostly nearer the bottom of the plant?

They are pretty much all over the plant Mumofstig.  But they have looked like that for a few days (been away for the weekend and spotted it on Thurs) and doesn't seem much worse.  Pic perhaps doesn't show enough detail but I will try and get a better one.

Do you know if the fruit is still edible?  Even if it is blight?

Blight involves a fungal element, which i can't see on yours.
But i've never had blight so wait for someone else to answer..............

"they have looked like that for a few days"

There is your answer!  If it was blight in a few days the plants would be seriously dead - it spreads so quickly.

It looks to me as though the plants are too cold - blame the unseasonable weather.

Cheers,

Gillie

Well it would be very good news if it wasn't blight that is for sure!  I didn't realise that blight was so quick to kill the plants?  I spotted these problems on Thursday and they look similar now, perhaps a little worse, but if as you say they would be dead by now then looks like a lucky escape!

Thank you  :)

Doesn't look like blight to me either!  Not that I'm an expert, but I had blight in my polytunnel toms last year and the toms were going brown and mouldy looking too as well as the leaves and stems.

Blight brown on leaves is in much bigger patches than yours Elcie, but if you DO get blight, what I did, was every day twice a day I kept taking off the blighted bits of leaves and fruit and burning them.  The plants looked a bit naked, but I saved a lot of the fruits doing that, and on some of the plants, new leaves and fruit trusses grew too, so don't give up on them unless you really have to!
