Asparagus Beetle-burning old stems
« on: January 24, 2015, 17:43 »
I had terrible asparagus beetle last year (until I discovered pyrethrum spray). RHS advises burning the old stems to destroy the overwintered beetles which I think live just below the soil surface in the roots.

Has anyone tried this? I haven't yet cut down my old ferns so was thinking of chopping them down to about 10cm above ground level and on a dry still day use a blowtorch to try to burn the stems tackling each plant individually. Am I mad???!! Or more importantly am I going to kill the asparagus I tended from seed four years ago?

Would shoving them on a bonfire not do the trick?

I think using a blowtorch on the existing stems would damage the roots, so perhaps carefully forking over the soil would expose the beetles for the birds to eat.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I agree GG. I just cut mine off and burn them in the incinerator, and fork over the ground then too. Gives the birds a chance to do their bit. I put a manure mulch on around now each year.

Used to have thousands but now hardly any  :D

Thanks for the advice! I've seen some blogs (usually American) where they set fire to the whole ferns but I'll go for the safer advice options you suggest.

Last time I set fire to dried weeds to burn them off was nearly 40 years ago. My plot then was within a farm, and the wind fanned the flames so that the weeds on the verge of the cow field were also aflame. I had to disconnect the water pipe to their water trough and use this to extinguish the flames, aided by the very angry farmer's daughters beating with wet sacks. I was terrified, both of the flames and of the angry sack wielding women

I learned my lesson   Today I burn things in an incinerator

Perhaps cut the stems, then turn the soil ,then a quick blast from the blow torch, the birds could then have roasted beetles :)
