Black marks on combs. Help please
« on: May 06, 2012, 09:15 »
3 of my chooks are showing black marks on their combs. It is not dirt - on closer inspection it looks as though there maybe some weeping from the black areas. I have looked up Favus and it does not seem to be that, there have been no white marks on their combs. Any suggestions for treating this. I am going to try a wound cream for now. :(

Joyful or Grannie Annie will know. They'll be hereabouts somewhere. We'll give them a shout out  :)

Any chance of a photo?  Could they have had a peck at each others combs and it's just scabbed over?

One of my cockerels Max has a gigantic comb. He often has little black scabs on it, and I assume he occasionally catches his comb on stuff causing it to bleed a little. I have never treated the scabs and just let nature heal them. I would only treat them if they were large wounds which obviously needed medical attention  :)

I would say either frost bite or peck damaged.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Its not frostbite I've seen that and its not scabs which is why I thought it is some sort of fungus. We tried photos yesterday but they are no good. Will try again. Thank you for your responses.

Have you checked the google images?  There may be one on there that looks identical.

My poor nugget kept getting pecked on her comb a couple of weeks back and it seemed to bruise rather than scab. this looked black. now my chooks have got their pecking order sorted it has stopped and the bruise disappeared so could it maybe be that it is cause by pecking and its bruised her comb??
