Every time I see you post, Grendel, the first thing I think about is paying just 75p a litre for petrol in that garage in Wincheap!

Silly, I know, but I spent half my life on that road from the Turrets each day...

As for your garlic, you have a sound plan, which must work well, otherwise you wouldn't do it!

Put in 2 rows of garlic. First went in around November and most came up and look to be doing fairly good. The second lot went in in Feb and are doing much better and are noticably bigger. Well the greenery is.

It actually looks like I may get a half reasonable crop this time, at least from half of what went in the ground.

Growster I spent years travelling either from Ashford to Tenterden daily, or later Canterbury to Tunbridge Wells, so I know those roads (and all the alternatives).

Well my packet said to plant them 1" deep.  Is that 1" from the top or the bottom??  :)

Good point, Grans!

I think with Garlic, it'll mean that the twiddly bit at the top is 1" under the surface, therefore the root section is nearly 2" below ground level! Mine are near the surface, like I would plant onion sets, but they have some support now with a little earthing up!

I was pondering this yesterday, when reading about spuds being 5" underground. It immediately meant to me that the hole would be 5" deep...:0)

Earthing them up an inch or two is a good idea, Growster, as the roots like to be nice and deep.

I plant mine with two inches of soil above them, as this means they are well protected during the winter and are less likely to dry out in the spring (if we get dry weather of course  )

Just means I have to actually dig them out not yank them up or the stem breaks off

They look good Jay001. Do you put any chicken pellets on them to give them a boost or anything?
