Garlic - it seems to be growing...
« on: May 04, 2013, 21:27 »
So our garlic corms, at last, seem to be thriving!

Are we lucky, or do we bow down to the great Garlic Queen, and beg forgiveness?

Actually, they're about 6" tall, and some of the roots are exposed, as they've squeezed themselves free of the soil!

We have never had any success with garlic, so any chums here can comment, I'm sure!

Hi Growster, my garlic is also about 6-7 inches high and looking well.  If they do well it will be the first time for me too.  Never had any success the other few times I've tried growing it!

When my shallots lift themselves (or get a helping hand from a passing pigeon) I just loosen the soil a little and push them back in.  Usually works.

Very interesting, Grans!

We netted ours, as the blasted dog kept wandering all over them and made us cross!

It seems like a good year so far, and don't we need it! All the other stuff down at the 'Patch' seems to be behaving so far, and you never know, this could be the year we all say 'Hurrah'!

(or buccer it..;0)

Teach the dog to walk round the paths!

That's what I do with Pennydog.  Yesterday she came round to where I was weeding, rope toy in mouth ready for me to throw it.  I said to her if I throw this from here, you will run over my veg patch won't you?  So I pretended to throw it and she ran straight over the patch.  Luckily it's an empty bit.

She then brought the toy back to me by walking round the path!  So I tried it again and she again ran over the patch, but walked back round the path!  I told her I wasn't playing if she cheats, so she turned round, saw Brian having a sit down and walked round the path to give him the toy!

She has our friends in stitches as she knows the grass is hers, but the soil patches are mine.  And when she wants to come and see me, she always walks round the path!

Nice one, Grans!

Those rope 'Ratties' are everywhere here, and the worst place is on the stairs...

I think I may copy the Stalag Luft 3 Camp design here, with a watch tower on each corner, as JRT just wanders everywhere!

I planted mine in november, and by spring had a couple of inches growth, now they are over 6" and going great guns, I dont deem to have much problems with them -other than they were a bit small last year.

If the weather looks a bit dry for the garlic, you can hoe up a bit of soil around those exposed roots or simply tip some bagged soil around them. This ensures they keep a good foothold in the soil against strong winds and heavy rain.

Glad you finally found success with the little stinkers.  :D

I didn't think Gurgle Earth could pick out my garlic, Trills, but there you go...;0)

I think I will earth them up as you say, as I purposely planted them shallow because - er - I thought that was the better way...
