Early Nantes Carrots
« on: April 04, 2009, 20:15 »
I have planted some early nantes carrots in buckets about 3-4 weeks ago but as yet I have not had any foliage appear yet.

Does anyone know how long it should take before they germinate?

Where did you keep the buckets?

The buckets are outdoors on a south facing raised decked area.

I did the same & I do have seedlings sprouting now. Approx 1 inch tall.

Could you possibly add a cloche to encourage growth?

Give them time.  MIne were up within two weeks, but they were in the greenhouse and grown in 50/50 compost and sharp sand.

I used a compost and sharp sand mix but mine was more like 75/25 compost to sand. I will leave them and keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for your help.

I haven't got a cloche, but I can buy some or will a black bin liner do?

I put my earlies in a couple of weeks ago, and nothing as yet.  I have a raised bed for them, and I put some sharp sand in and mixed it up.  I week later, I put in some onion sets, and the sets are starting to come up.  I'll just keep my eye open just in case.

Hi greenstan77
Thanks for your suggestion, I have just covered the bucket over with a bit of polythene let's hope this will help encourage them to come up.

Hi lucywil
Yes the polythene is really quite thin, very transparent, it is actually a bit of decorators floor protector, as I guessed the light would play an inportant factor.
Thanks for your help.

Just to let anyone know who has been following this post I put some clear plastic over the bucket I am growing the carrots in and I am glad to say they are coming up a treat now.

Amazing how a little bit of plastic can make the difference but really has worked. Fingers crossed for a good crop!
