« on: March 30, 2015, 21:26 »
I am going to try sweetcorn F1 minipop this year I would be interested to know how other growers have got on with them, any tips or advice would be appreciated have not grown mini sweetcorn before.  Will also be growing F1 Sundance am I correct in thinking they can be grown close together on the plot.
Thank you Steve  :)

As the Minipop don't need fertilising you can cut off the tassels at the top, that way there's no chance of cross- fertilising the other corn.

Don't try to twist the cobs off, like you do ordinary sweetcorn, as you will snap either the main stem or the mini cobs
It's safest to use secateurs  ;)

I grew minipop for the first time last year and had a good yield.  They were lovely!  :) :)

I grew them a couple of years ago in florist pots and it turned out well. None of them actually made it home  ::)

If you take the tassels off how big do you let them get before you cut them?

As sweetcorn is wind pollinated how far from other sweetcorn should they be?

I cut the cobs as soon as the silks have grown out - like this

Maybe I was doing something wrong, but I had huge difficultly harvesting at "just the right time" ... a day or two too long and it was too late, and I seem to remember it being very hard to tell "when" so I am doubting I was able to leave them until silks showing. Perhaps I had a different variety, or I was doing it wrong and didn't wait long enough.

Stopped growing them when the kids grew out of them!
