Title: More Computer Advice Please
Post by: mrs bouquet on July 12, 2018, 15:04
In the bottom right hand a notice very frequently pops up telling me Disc F is full.  If I click it a boc comes up on the left   Which says -   To clean up 0 bytes.   Underneath it shows 2 lines, 1 says - Direct Shader Cache 0 bytes, and the other - Recycle Bin 0 bytes.  So I have ticked both of these and pressed clean-up OK.
Made no difference at all (would it, if its 0 bytes?)
So I looked on google how to clear it:-
Click start (where is that, does it mean on button)
R click on Command prompt and Click on run as administrator.
Then pt in this:   Mountrol F: /D   -  Hit enter.
Done all this.
No difference.
Can anybody tell me what to do next, in very simple speak.
(Cannot call the comp.man, cannot afford him anymore !)
Please remember it has to be very very simple for me  Thanks, Mrs Bouquet

Comp: is Asus, with Windows 10

Your F drive is probably the factory restore / backup drive.

Depending on what software your using there may be a clean up option to remove some of the older backups. If there's not you probably need to start resizing partitions with isn't something you want to be doing without a working backup.  Whats the model number and I'll see if there are any destructions online.

Be careful just entering stuff you find in google - not everything you will find is helpful and some can be destructive.

Looks like a bug in a recent windows 10 update:

Or just remove the drive letter assignment like Jayg said  :nowink:

The command thingy, I did find  something about partitions, but I didn't understand that.

The Model is X553M, and under the barcode it says X553MA-XX365T
It did an update this morning, so I hoped it might go, but its still there.
Those instructions from Jayg look very complicated to me is it a link I have to press on, and go from there ?

I love my laptop - but can only do it when there are no snags, then I am b------d  ::) Mrs Bouquet

Thinking back it did a very large update 2/3 weeks ago I remember it because it took all day !!!!

The link shows you how to do it from a command prompt.  Here's a "how to" remove a drive letter from disk manager which is more point and click and probably easier to follow if you're not a fan typing.

https://winaero.com/blog/remove-drive-letter-windows-10/ (https://winaero.com/blog/remove-drive-letter-windows-10/)

Just make sure you select the F drive from the list before clicking remove.

These are the relevant instructions from the link I posted earlier:

Quote
This is a known bug in the 1803 Update,

It is the recovery drive, you are not meant to see it, it is not meant to have a drive letter, remove the drive letter and everything will return to normal:

Click your Start Button, type cmd, then right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Run this command and hit Enter

diskpart

Run this command and hit Enter

list volume

Note down the letter associated with that new drive

Run these commands one at a time and hit Enter (replace X with the correct drive letter)

select volume X

remove letter=X

Close Command Prompt and restart your PC

The following is what it should look like when you run it on your laptop - I've shown the commands you actually type in in blue.

C:\Windows\system32>diskpart

DISKPART> list volume

Volume ###  Ltr  Label        Fs     Type        Size     Status     Info
  ----------  ---  -----------  -----  ----------  -------  ---------  --------
  Volume 0     E                       DVD-ROM         0 B  No Media
Volume 1         SYSTEM       NTFS   Partition    100 MB  Healthy    System
Volume 2     C   HP           NTFS   Partition    453 GB  Healthy    Boot
  Volume 3     D   FACTORY_IMA  NTFS   Partition     12 GB  Healthy
  Volume 4     G                       Removable       0 B  No Media
  Volume 5     H                       Removable       0 B  No Media
  Volume 6     I                       Removable       0 B  No Media
  Volume 7     J                       Removable       0 B  No Media

DISKPART> select volume # (replace # with the volume number that actually has drive letter F on your computer from the list above.)

Volume # is the selected volume. (# will be the number of the volume on your PC with drive letter F which you selected in the previous command.)

DISKPART> remove letter=F

This should do the trick after you've restarted your computer - hope this makes it clearer rather than even more complicated!

Oh, I say, that looks terrifying.   But fortunately a friend came in just when I was trying to do it (she is a bit better then me !)We didn't know where the start button was !!
We got into Command Administrator, and followed the commands, to the very end.  Then it said it was having a cleared out, and showed a line from L to R telling me how much % until it was 100.
Excellent -   But no, wait a minute - its back !!!
If I leave the fault square it goes in 60 seconds or so.   I guess I shall have to live with it.

So many thanks again to you, and if you are ever near Findon, please call in.   !!!!!

Regards Mrs Bouquet

Thanks for the offer Mrs. B - you never know, I have many family members in Hastings but I don't get down very often.

Last step in the process was rebooting the computer - I'm assuming you have actually done that...

Yep.  Mrs B (Hastings isn't far from us) !

Oh well, doesn't seem to be a critical bug, and with any luck Microsoft will put it right in the next update...

I thought to re-boot meant turn it off and turn it on.  So after your reply, I check on Google and I don't think I did it properly.   Tomorrow morning (when I am not so tired)  I am going to do it all again, and then reboot.
Thanks again, Mrs B

So did I. Having looked on-line it says this:-
To perform a hard reboot or cold reboot, press and hold down the power button on the computer. After 5-10 seconds, the computer should turn off. Once the computer is off, wait a few seconds and then turn the computer back on.
If that don't work, give it a kick with your wellie!

Well, I do often turn it off and hold down for 10 seconds, you can hear the click when it goes off.

So today, I decided to try and re-boot.   Followed all the instructions, it took about 2 hours to do the run.
When I turned it back on, it s in complete chaos.   Cou;dn't get into our site,  tried to log in again, but had forgotten password.  Couldn't get into emails to change it.  I have managed a few corrections, but there is some seriously weird stuff when I switch laptop on now.
So in desperation I rang Les (computer tutor).   He groaned and said, when I rebooted it has taken everything out - back to the day it was installed - so he's coming Wednesday pm  (more money !) to put it right again !!!
But at least I have managed to sign myself back in here, and also emails.  That'll keep me going for now  :D :D :D I just wanted to try and do it myself, but failed  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)Mrs Bouquet  PS: I only hold off switch down a couple of times, when I couldn't switch off, and had lost the arrow. I  am  not really bad honest, just a bit old and silly  ::) ::)

He groaned and said, when I rebooted it has taken everything out - back to the day it was installed

It doesn't do that. What instructions did you follow, they weren't perhaps ones to refresh or reset windows 10 instead of rebooting where they.  ::) as the first google result on "windows 10 reboot" shows the reset procedure.

For the record, you should never need to press and hold the power button unless the system has locked up and the keyboard, mouse pointer wont respond.  Rebooting, or closing the lid isn't the same as a shutdown the system does different tasks depending on which you do, but both are available from the start bar or that silly chimes thing on the right hand side.

Just as an after thought - why not ask Len to set up 2 accounts for you, a standard user account and an account with administrator rights. If all you're doing is web & email and the odd document you don't need admin rights and it would prevent any more nasty accidents.  ;) .

This is what I did:
Navigate to settings - Select update and security - click recover in the L pane - click get started under Reset this PC - Click "keep my File "

But the best bit is that the Local F Disk Sign is still there.

Les did say about linking up, but I do quite alot of banking etc on laptop, and I am very naughty becase I nly use 1 or 2 passwords.    I know, I know.  Although, one of my banks, my voice is my recognition.

If it wasn't through isolation because of severe deafness etc, I feel like chucking the whole lt away  :D

Navigate to settings - Select update and security - click recover in the L pane - click get started under Reset this PC - Click "keep my File "

You've reset windows 10 back to it's default state, whilst it will have kept your documents it removes your settings and applications as you've seen. It's something you should only need to do if your computer stops working properly - why Microsoft made it so easy for the user to do I will never know.

Most professional support is done remotely, if I go out onsite now it's usually because the customers internet is down, the cleaner has unplugged something or I want a cup of coffee I haven't had to make myself. Don't be too hard on Les it's standard practice, how it's implemented is more important. You either trust him or don't, it shouldn't matter if he's sitting in front of the machine or at home with his feet up.

If one of my customers had called with your F drive issue, I'd have remotely connected and sorted it free of charge before they'd have had time to boil the kettle.  If id have had to put a shirt and tie on, drive out to them, find parking,  be pleasant and make small talk for 15 minutes then fix the problem and drive back they'd be getting an invoice to cover my hassle  ;)

Don't feel too bad about wanting to bin the laptop, I've thrown many a mouse against the wall in frustration over the years and I simply refuse to play nicely with Windows 10.

Even the simplest electronic gadget is now needlessly complicated Mrs. B. (not because they really need to be but because designers feel duty bound to dream up new 'tricks' to make their version unique and therefore a 'must buy.')

It's unfortunate that the word 'reset' is sometimes used as if was the same thing as 'reboot', which as Lardman has pointed out is not the case. Forcing a shut down by holding down the power button is definitely something you should only do if the normal methods of shutting down or rebooting don't work for some reason.

Perhaps an Android tablet might be worth considering if you mainly use your laptop for surfing the internet  - I'm not saying the Android operating system is either perfect or bulletproof, but in my experience it minds its own business and looks after itself with less fuss than Windows 10 appears to in certain circumstances.

I was going to suggest an iPad, so easy to use only once had an issue with mine & that was about 5 weeks ago, then I used hubby’s MacBook to ask Apple web site what to do, & I sorted it, so must be simple. I do all my banking etc on it. Hubby hates it though

I have got an Apple I-pad.  My Son bought it for me to keep in touch with Grandchildren and do facetime.
I send them a note every single weekend, but never get any replies.  It hurts - so now I don't look at it.
But I guess that's silly.  I have done a little bit on it, but I am not very au fait, and there isn't an instruction book.  Mind you I probably wouldn't understand it anyway
I do trust Les, but he has 2 teenage children etc etc, and if anything went wrong I wouldn't like him to be compromised.   Mrs Bouquet

This morning I found my nearest Apple Shop, It is in Brighton.  So I rang their number I got a computer voice asking me to this, that and something else.  Eventually I got an assistant and said I wanted to send out an email from my Ipad, gave him the model A1430, but it was very difficult to understand him as he had a very strong foreign accent.   He kept telling me to press a button, which I don't appear to have, so I just said politely thank you and gave up.

Then I went to Curry's when the two male assistants (wearing their "here to help" badges)  had finished their natter.  I said, Can I send an email from my Apple I-pad.  He replied,  you can sign in for a tutorial which costs £20 for about 20 minutes.  I said, ok.  and left

Perhaps either me or the I-pad is not sufficiently tuned in  :D :D  Not for wont of me trying though. Mrs Bouquet
