Tools For The Job?
« on: February 04, 2008, 20:03 »
After a rummage round the garden shed i have come up with a hefty collection of tools for use when i get my allotment. So far i have a shovel, a spade and a rake!

Brilliant!

Can you give some guidance on what else i will need pls!

Depends what your soil is like, Glen. If it's clayish or full of old shrubs, weeds, etc. then an azada tool would be very handy for both digging out the junk and also trenching out beds. Check the search engine above for previous posts on that tool.

You'll also want to make a string line with small posts at both ends that you can use to seed your beds in a straight line.

Personally, I find a long bladed hand weeder handy for getting out long tap roots from veg beds.

Do check out John's Allotment Shop above for good deals.

And possibly a wheelbarrow, a used one - for hauling around compost, weeds, moving soil, etc.

You really don't need a lot of fancy gadgets, just well made basics.

A hand fork, for forking things with. A chair, for admiring things from. Odd bricks, plastic bottles, pallets, other bits of wood, canes, string, wire for filling up your shed with. And they will come in handy.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
