Help me choose my first raised bed
« on: October 21, 2010, 19:14 »
Hi,

I have amazon money to spend and plan to get a raised bed and shelter to start growing salad in my yard. I am new to raised beds and would like to make use of the rest of the space (I already have a greenhouse). I have seen two so far:

I'd buy the raised grow bed and support frame together and find a cover from elsewhere:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/GARLAND-RAISED-GROW-SUPPORT-FRAME/dp/B00139WDPW/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&s=outdoors&qid=1287684076&sr=1-16

OR

I'd buy the cover, frame and base which is more expensive and ever so slightly bigger:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Haxnicks-Raised-Bed-Micromesh-Cover/dp/B001H82YG2/ref=pd_bxgy_lp_img_c

I'd really appreciate any advice from anyone with raised be experience. Feel free to suggest any other amazon.co.uk raised beds. Many thanks in advance.

I'm really sorry for the double post and now it won't let me delete it.

Your wish is my command (just don't ask me how to grow perfect Florence Fennel!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Hello munchkin
In my opinion both of those look good. Is it just salad you plan to grow or are you likely to want to grow something taller in the future? What will you be standing it on - concrete or soil?

I'm just planning to grow a variety of salad for now including spinach. I read that it's possible to grow throughout the year so thought if I bought one raised bed and had success with the salad I could get a second raised bed to grow other stuff next to it. I discovered today after digging through a pile of rubbish mixed with brick and soil that there is concrete not very far below, give or take 5".

I'd perhaps go for the slightly deeper one then so you have a reasonable growing depth for the roots. It'd probably be a bit less prone to drying out too.

Those two links seem to be just to the cover and don't include the raised bed.

EDIT:  The raised beds are further down the page ::)

Tis a pleasure - glad I've found something I can actually help with rather than just the usual question asking!

Honestly I would be tempted to spend the Amazon money on a variety of books and get your raised bed from B&Q or similar in the form of planks of wood.  It really isn't difficult to acquire a good looking bed for a very cheap price compared to kits.

I did think of that Elcie but I already have a couple of books on gardening and didn't want to spend 'real' money on materials. It's all ordered now...super excited and it's going up this week.
