Strange Lettuce
« on: July 05, 2016, 16:49 »
Hi. I'm not able to identify this lettuce. We've lost the label and internet searches are not helping.
Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers.

Welcome to the site  :D

Is it going to be a British variety?  The taller plants on the left have 'bolted', in other words they've gone to seed.  They would usually be the usual low height before bolting occurs.

I'm not sure from the photo whether they would have been a 'cut and come again' loose leaf variety (like the lollo rosso type at the front bottom of the picture) or one with a heart e.g. Webbs wonderful.

The one on the right of the photo looks more kale-like to me.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi Yorkie.
Thanks for the welcome. Sorry for including the kale in the photo.
I'll look up "bolted". Three plants are the usual loose leaf and the other three have "bolted".
I'm not sure if we have british here in Canada, other than my ancestors.
Many Thanks for your input.
Cheers.

"Bolting", explained by the Royal Horticultural Society:

They do not look like a variety that "hearts up", to me, as from having ones such as Webbs Wonder run to seed, the lower leaves are still pretty much bunched up, so maybe a loose leaf sort that does not have frilly leaves?

Sorry, welcome to the forum... always good to have new members from afar 😎

The term "hearts up". Is it the same as "bolting"?
Taste test tonight.
Thank You for the welcome. Great Site!!

Bolting is where the lettuce has gone to seed.  From being a compact set of leaves, the stem suddenly shoots up and forms flowers.  The lettuce is bitter from this stage.  You can cut it off at ground level and put some slug pellets down.  Within a couple of weeks you will probably get some new growth that you can use.  Generally though once the plant has decided to go on to produce flowers you can not change its mind and is best pulled out of the ground and given to the chickens or the compost heap.  it is difficult to see what variety it is from your picture but looks to be of a "little gem" variety.

No, not the same thing.  'Hearting up' is when a regular type lettuce (as opposed to one which just has lots of loose salad leaves) forms the tight heart or ball of leaves in its centre.

Jeez Jezza!! My 5 plants seem so small an issue, when you have that disaster.
Thanks for the response.
