Very dry pigeon poo
« on: November 06, 2011, 16:37 »
Hi all!

I had a gander at previous postings on pigeon poo, but I'm still a little confuzzled on how to use it.
I've just been given a sack of very dry pigeon poo that's been stored for years apparantley. I've spread a little around my garlic as I was advised to do, then topped it with compost. The chap was unsure about using it for spuds due to some alkaline content

I have been advised that it will clump if it gets wet..

What should I do with it please?

If it was me I'd probably chuck it on my compost pile

I have pigeons and always use their poo direct in the garden. Aged poo like yours is safe to use right away, and no, it does not clump unless you apply it as one large lump. Any poo will clump like that.

If anything, pigeon poo leans towards the acidic level, and since lime or wood ash are recommended to help release nutrients, there's no problem.

Thanks Trillium :).

One last thing, being renowned for it's allergy potential, does it affect subsequent crop consumption?

Thanks Mash  :)

I've never had that happen, nor have friends of mine who also keep pigeons and use it in their gardens. In fact, I have requests from friends for pigeon poo so they can add it to their blueberry bushes. Seems the two items do well together.

If anything, there's more potential problems from traditional manures where the animals might have eaten hay sprayed with aminopyrallid.
